| In the year 1824, Mexico won its independence and Pio Pico gained control of 133,300 acres, | |||||||
| which was the largest of all the land grants in California. This became known as El Rancho Santa | |||||||
| Margarita y las Flores. This grant later went from the Pico brothers, Pio and Andres, to Don Juan | |||||||
| Forrester, and finally to Richard O'Neill and James C. Flood. Thus, the Spanish epoch was ended | |||||||
| in 1882. | |||||||

| The Santa Margarita Women's Golf Association (SMWGA) was organized in 1967 and was so | |||||||
| Member Clubs | named because all member clubs were within the borders of the original Spanish Land Grant. It | ||||||
| Spanish Land Grant. It was formed to promote good fellowship among women members of | |||||||
| Calendar | private and semi-private golf clubs within the limits of the Santa Margarita Land Grant, and to afford | ||||||
| participation in association field days, which would be equally available to all members. Subject to | |||||||

| Information | Any full 18-hole club member woman golfer in good standing in a member club who is 18 years | ||||||
| or older and has an established USGA index is eligible for membership upon payment of annual | |||||||
| Field Days | dues as decided by the Board of Directors. | ||||||

| Winners | Selected member clubs host field days during the year. The Winners' Circle is held at the home | ||||||
| club of the 1st VP/Tournament Chair. A two-day "Getaway" Tournament is held at a neutral course. | |||||||

| Standing Rules | Each member club fields a team that competes in inter-club matches during the months of July | ||||||
| through October. At the conclusion of team play, an Awards Luncheon is held at one of the | |||||||
| Minutes | member clubs in conjunction with their regular field day. | ||||||
| The SMWGA governing board consists of two representatives from each member club. The | |||||||
| new governing board is installed at the first Board of Directors meeting of the calendar year and | |||||||
| introduced at the annual meeting, held on the first field day of the calendar year. | |||||||
| The Patroness of the organization and an honorary member is Mrs. Alice Marguarite O'Neill Avery, | |||||||
| the granddaughter of Richard O'Neill, one of the original owners of the Santa Margarita Land Grant. | |||||||
| The Founder of SMWGA was June Abernathy Renaud. | |||||||
